/ 01 - Providing purpose, & architectural presence

249 Thayer / Shake Shack

Set among the eclectic shops, eateries, and daily movement of Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, the four-story mixed-use development was designed to anchor the neighborhood while contributing to its continued evolution. The upper three floors are home to Brown University’s Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, creating a dedicated space for innovation, collaboration, and new ideas. At street level, Shake Shack’s first Rhode Island location activates the ground floor, serving the lively Upper East Side community with a familiar and vibrant destination.

/ 02 - Creating a more accessible community

The building’s refined composition of stone, metal panel, and glazing gives the structure a jewel-like quality, balancing contemporary expression with the scale and rhythm of its urban setting. As part of the neighborhood’s broader mixed-use vision, 249 Thayer supports a connected, walkable, and dynamic district.

Recognized with a 2020 AIA Rhode Island Merit Award, the project stands as a catalyst for future growth, bringing together education, entrepreneurship, dining, and community within one thoughtfully composed urban landmark.
